During the last few weeks of class, we read about transmedia franchises, which are popular franchises such as Star Wars and The Matrix that exist on multiple media platforms and engage audiences in a complex, intertextual world. For our last class assignment, we were asked to create our own transmedia content. This content had to be contained on three different media, and each text had to have the ability to be enjoyed both separately and with one another to create a deeper meaning to the overarching story.
For this project, I focused on creating a story surrounding my three-week study abroad experience in New Zealand. I used journal entries I wrote on the trip as my jumping point, putting these entries into a blog format using WordPress. I then put some of the pictures from the trip which corresponded to places I wrote about in my blog into an Instagram account. Also, since I talked in my blog about my Spotify playlist that I listened to over the course of the trip, I created a similar playlist for this assignment. I connected the three by putting quotes from the songs in my picture descriptions on Instagram and linking the pictures and playlist into my blog posts; however, each of the three media can also be enjoyed on their own without needing the other texts as context, which was the goal of the assignment.
